If you’re adding Ryan Fitzpatrick to your 2018 Fantasy Football team this week because he scored more points than your starter, you’re overreacting.
He’s played on five teams since 2012, and he only has one season with more than 24 touchdown passes. In a 14-game season with the New York Jets in 2016, he threw 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. That’s why, if you drafted Cam Newton, Kirk Cousins, DeShaun Watson, or Andrew Luck, you’re still starting them over Fitzpatrick.
His history in the NFL indicates he will not be a top-tier Fantasy Football quarterback each week.
However, I know not every Fantasy player is in the same situation.
Outside of speculation, I see three reasons why you would want to add Fitzpatrick to your roster. That’s why I did added him to my list of waiver wire picks this week.
He has a tough matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, but if you find yourself in one of these situations, you could use his help going forward…
Reason for Adding Ryan Fitzpatrick, No. 3: Jameis Winston Is Your Backup
I thought it was just a standard speech when GM Jason Licht said that it wasn’t guaranteed that Winston would be the starter when he returns from his three-game suspension.
Fitzpatrick will need to keep playing at a high level over the next two weeks.
But if he throws three or four touchdown passes per game and limits his turnovers, how could Tampa Bay bench him?
If you have a stud quarterback and drafted Winston as your backup, you may need to be ready to drop him for Fitzpatrick.
Reason for Adding Ryan Fitzpatrick, No. 2: If You Own Carson Wentz
If you drafted Wentz and handcuffed him to Foles, kudos. At the time, that was the right move to make. In the five games he completed 19 or more passes, he totaled 11 touchdown passes and threw just two interceptions.
But we all saw his performance in Week 1.
Alshon Jeffery is still out.
Do you really feel confident starting him in Week 2?
Reason for Adding Ryan Fitzpatrick, No. 1: You Waited on Quarterbacks
There was a lot of talent at the quarterback position still on the board after Round 10. I grabbed Philip Rivers and Patrick Mahomes in as many best ball leagues as I could.
But I also drafted Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariota, and Derek Carr.
Here’s how they performed last week:
|Quarterback||Passing Attempts||Completions||Passing Yards||TDs||Interceptions|
And keep in mind Mariota is dealing with an elbow issue.
I’m not overreacting, but this isn’t a great start. That’s why I wouldn’t mind adding Ryan Fitzpatrick off waivers this week as a third QB to see how things shake out.
